“Why is Grandpa digging up the garden again?”
“I told you dear, he just really misses Grandma.”
Little Ethan didn’t remember much about Grandma, but he did recall her hugs. This warm, comforting embrace that made him want to snuggle in and melt into a peaceful night’s sleep.
Mum said she loved gardening. She’d plant all sorts of flowers and had even made a small vegetable patch. Unfortunately, there was no one to take care of the garden after she died. They couldn’t afford a gardener and Mum and Dad were too busy working all day.
In the past month Grandpa had suddenly started digging up small parts of the garden, trying to get the flowers growing again. Then he’d get too tired and and they’d wither and die. After a couple of days, he’d start anew.
Ethan went outside and put his small hand on Grandpa’s frail one.
“I’ll help you Grandpa, we’ll get Grandma’s flowers growing again!”
Ethan kept his promise and soon, Grandma’s favourite flowers were smiling again, as was Grandpa.
Aw, always feels good to have a sweet, warm ending. I was hoping that would happen, so I’m glad it did. Thanks for posting this story!

Love the warm relationship between grandpa and grandson. Your story made me very melancholy for my grandpa. Your words stretched my emotions. Beautiful.
I hope the story got back some nice memories for you! ☺ Thank you so much! ☺
it did! it was nice recollecting them from your story
I hope they are both rewarded for their toil. Loved your story. Mike

A very sweet story. Ethan was a very understanding little boy. It’s wonderful that he could help make his grandpa happy again.
He’s a very lucky grandpa to have such an understanding grandson! Thank you for reading! ☺
Poor Grandpa. The garden, the flowers, vegetables remind him of Grandma. Good memories. I’m delighted he has Ethah to help him now, so the plants will grow and not wither. Good experience for Ethab and wonderful chance for him to get to know his Grandpa 🙂 Great story S.
A very nice way for them to bond! Thank you! 😊
Very sweet 🙂
Thank you for reading! 😊
Beautifully written and I loved the sweet ending, still smiling 🙂
Thank you so much! Happy it made you smile! 😊
Lovely story. It occurred to me you could have an alternate Psychotic version:
“Why is Grandpa digging up the garden again?”
“I told you dear, he just really misses Grandma”
“Well he should have thought about that before he buried her!”
Hahaha! I wish I’d thought of that! 😄Thanks for reading! ☺
Awww, I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. 🙂
😊 Thanks for reading! ☺
Ah, that’s lovely. Those are the times you most need your loved ones and kids can be the best of all at being loving and supportive and taking you out of yourself. Lovely, warmhearted tale.
My first time on FFfAW and every ine has been a winner so far! 🙂
Yes, kids really can be the ones to make feel happy and smile again. Thank you so much! Welcome to FFfAW! 🙂
Thank you, nice to be here!
Children manage to be distracted by joy, while adults become preoccupied by loss. Kids live in the moment and we so often live in the past and the future. We could learn much from them
Awww, that was so sweet of Ethan. Such a smart kid,
Yes he is! 😊 Thank you for reading! ☺
My pleasure, I enjoyed it 😊
A charming story about a very close and loving family. You make us feel for Grandpa’s loss really well through through his gardening activity. Lovely characterisation, of both little Ethan and Grandpa. I can also ‘see’ Grandma giving Ethan those hugs. 🙂
Thank you so much for your comment! I’m so glad you got so much out of the story and the characters! Thanks for reading! ☺
You’re welcome – just sorry I left things until last minute. (I tend to do that a lot, unfortunately. There just aren’t enough hours in the day for me, sometimes. 🙂 )
That’s perfectly alright! Writing and keeping a blog should be fun and stress free! Thanks again! 😊
Lovely piece, for a second there I thought grandpa was trying to dig up grandma! The way you took it is definitely better though haha 🙂 Keep writing, and thanks for stopping by my blog.
Haha! That would have been an eerily fun twist to the tale! 😀 You’re welcome! Thanks for stopping by as well! ☺
Such a sweet story of love and family
