FFfAW: Averted

She was here again today. A solitary being who exuded sadness.

Toby understood that feeling well. Sometimes people preferred being alone in a place of worship, finding solace only in a feeling of close proximity to God and no one else.

After his one true love perished in the crash, he’d often come to this church and sit for an excruciating number of hours. The angels above showered hope, willing him to live as ugly whisperings of joining his beloved cascaded through his mind.

A similar look of heartbreak enveloped her and suddenly Toby went up to where she sat. As he got nearer, she looked even more frail up close.

“Don’t give up,” he said softly.

She looked up startled, with tear-stained cheeks and sorrowful eyes.

“Whatever you do, don’t give up on life.”

Toby left her with a reassuring smile and went back to help the other volunteers.

Hands trembling, Alice dropped the bottle of pills she’d decided to eat that day.

Moments and scenes like this happen everyday–a life is saved, in one way or another, because someone cared enough to speak just a few words. It’s so important that we be brave enough to risk 🙂

  5. Lyn says:

Oh, I really loved this! I’m glad he listened to that still small voice that told him to speak to the woman. Sometimes God’s angels don’t always have wings.

  9. Beautiful and moving story! Sometimes, all one needs is that one person to come up and remind us that all is not lost. We need our human angels.

  10. How beautiful and sweet. Toby was an angel sent to keep her from harming herself.
