At first when he’d make fun of her cooking, Zehra used to laugh as well, but then she just felt foolish when he mocked her in front of others.
After two years of a resentful marriage and failed patch-up efforts, she was back home with her parents.
When an aunt told her of this really nice guy, she agreed to meet him mainly because of her mother’s pleas. But in truth, she had lost all faith in marriage, arranged or otherwise.
Meeting Muhammad, she told him bluntly that she couldn’t cook, to which he grinned and replied that being a chef wasn’t a necessary quality in a wife.
Somehow she found herself agreeing when the proposal came.
A few weeks into her new marriage, when the cook didn’t turn up, she went into the pantry and made breakfast, almost wincing when she took a bite of the overly salty eggs.
Her first instinct was to apologize, but Muhammad just smiled and said, “I love salty eggs.”
That night she thanked God for a husband who loved her for her.
