Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers

“Hey Tommy, maybe you could borrow your sister’s pink tricycle!”
As Eddie and Fred roared with laughter, tearful Tommy walked back home with the bicycle Daddy had bought him for his tenth birthday, a few days before he went to heaven.
He just couldn’t get the hang of it. He had teetered and tumbled so many times, he was now called Teetering Tom in his neighbourhood.
Then they shifted to Uncle Brian’s and everything changed.
Now fifteen, Tommy tightened his helmet and joined the other riders at the starting line. He was back in his old hometown for the first time in five years.
Nearing the finish line, Tommy waved cheerily to stunned Eddie and Fred, who gawked stupidly as he whizzed by, their jaws dropping even further as he mounted the victory podium marked 1.
His family clapped proudly from the stands. The youngest competitor ever to take part in this marathon was once again famous in his neighbourhood.
