“I’m dying,” Katie’s lips trembled as she finally decided to say those words out loud.

Daddy stroked his little girl’s hair.

“We’re all dying.”

The disapproval showed on Mummy’s face. The divorce had made her disagree with everything he said, whenever he said it.

The horn made them look up.

“I don’t want to see anybody,” Katie said quickly. No more visitors trying to make her feel as if she just had the flu and would be up and about in no time.

Daddy smiled and lifted her up in his arms.

“Daddy!” squealed Katie. “You got it!”

Her fairy tale car. The car Daddy had promised, as she lay weakly in bed telling him all about the magic car she had seen in her dreams.

Mummy was silent. She just stared at the colourful car with flowerpots on the roof, exactly how Katie had described it. The car she had argued about in the lawyer’s office. The car he had sent to the workshop to make their daughter’s dream come true.
